Case Studies

All Enterprise Development (ED) Partners were offered the opportunity to attend two industry essential, two-day training courses – Construction Law and Construction Estimating – presented by Alusani Skills and Training Network. In addition to facilitating interactions with an industry specialist and accredited service provider the training also provided opportunity for ED partners to network, engage, share, learn, and discover, that even though the majority of them operate across vastly different disciplines within the construction industry, they all face similar challenges.

The ED partners who participated in the training included:

Construction Law – 19 & 20 September 2023 Estimating Training – 5 & 6 October 2023
Mega Roads & Civils (Pty) Ltd Mega Roads & Civils (Pty) Ltd
Sharpshell Engineering (Pty) Ltd Sharpshell Engineering (Pty) Ltd

Trilogy Formwork (Pty) Ltd Trilogy Formwork (Pty) Ltd
Ongi General Trading CC Ongi General Trading CC

A key motivation for many attending Construction Law included non-payments by clients for work completed. The course highlighted awareness to rights and entitlements commensurate to self-performance under Contract; as well as how to remedy for non-payment and delayed practical completion by the Principal Agent under the Joint Building Contracts Committee (JBCC) contract. All participants undertook to utilise the knowledge gained in the course by being more proactive and ensuring they read and understood contracts before signing them.

Abram Mashabela from Mathomomayo Investment Holdings says that knowledge is power, and left being able to easily differentiate between the different types of construction contracts. “One of the reasons I attended was because a subcontractor on a project had given us a huge bill, based on a verbal agreement with our site engineer,” he says. “Now we know that we will not let a subcontractor on site without having a signed contract, with relevant losses.”  Mashabela undertook to conduct a detailed training workshop with his entire management team to empower them through the knowledge he gained during this course.

PAMCO Site Supervisor Philisiwe Vilakazi said the course was an eye opener for her, as well as giving her more clarity about the industry. She, alongside a further 11 other delegates, also attended Construction Estimating. “It offered significant knowledge in the areas I have struggled with when pricing tender documents, and I have improved my pricing system by applying these principles,” she says. “We have since tendered for a number of contracts, and PAMCO is on the shortlist for two.”

Alusani trainer, Bradley Doyle felt that the overall transfer of skills over the two courses was very successful. “The participation was incredible and I thoroughly enjoyed training this wonderful group of people,” says Doyle. “I was struck by the geographical spread of the partners and level of diversity of Disciplines, as they all impact disciplines that can add up to a single successful estimate – the overall impact of the Stefanutti Stocks ED programme is phenomenal and really constructive.”
