Transnet SAPREF R Tanks Project

Stefanutti Stocks’ Oil & Gas Discipline undertook the Transnet SAPREF R tanks project for SAPREF in Island View between June 2019 to March 2022.

Background: The SAPREF R Tanks project involved the design and construction of two new 24 307m3 diesel/petrol tanks and associated works. Once the tanks are commissioned Transnet will be able to demolish the existing SAPREF tank within the New Multi Product Pipeline (NMPP) footprint, this will make space for the three planned NMPP Jet Tanks that are planned to be built in the future.

The Project Scope

This project included the engineering, procurement, construction, and handover of the two tanks. The scope encompassed:

  • Inspection and validation of the existing tank foundations and associated civil works.
  • Construction of two new 24 307m3 petrol/diesel storage tanks – namely T2107R2 and T2108R2 – with their respective Geodesic Dome Roofs including GRE internal floating roofs.
  • Completion of concrete slabs and bund walls, as well as the reinstatement of concrete fence panels to ensure the south boundary is secure.

A critical challenge during the contact was ensuring that the foundations’ underlying layers were indeed suitable to support the new tanks and their expected loads within operating conditions.
