Premier Project Profile

Tar Filtration East (CTFE) Filter Press

Stefanutti Stocks’ Electrical & Instrumentation Discipline undertook the Tar Filtration East (CTFE) Filter Press project for Sasol between June 2017 to August 2018.

Background: To minimise the amount of work required on site Sasol chose to partially construct the CTF East Plant using modular design methodology.

The Project Scope

The scope of work on this contract included the completion of electrical & instrumentation, fire & gas, steam-tracing construction, and installation services.

The electrical and instrumentation scope included the installation of:

  • all instrument and control equipment,
  • new lights,
  • earthing protection,
  • drives, and
  • power to electric hoist in the buildings and the field

Modular construction

The modules were delivered with the steam tracing, insulation and cladding installed (apart from IBL-PR3 and TF1-PM2) up to 300 mm from the module breaks. All site related steam tracing, insulation, cladding and tagging – as per drawings and including modules IBL-PR3 and TF1-PM2 – formed part of the scope of work.

The Stefanutti Stocks team managed resources in relation to available work fronts, and (due to some mechanical and installation delays) undertook work, as and when access was available.

A continual focus on safe operations resulted in a lost time injury frequency rate (LTIFR) of zero.

Notable quantities

  • 210 000m cable
  • 9 100m cable racking
  • 7 800 terminations
  • 1 270 Inputs/Outputs (I/O)
  • 3 200m instrument tubing
  • 3 400m steam tracing
