Premier Project Profile

QUMZA Highway

This upgrade of the QUMZA Highway in East London, was undertaken by Stefanutti Stocks’ Roads & Earthworks Discipline for the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality between July 2018 and September 2021.

Background: Buffalo City Metro is on an investment drive, in particular for infrastructure upgrades and road construction projects, including the recently completed upgrade of the Qumza Highway between NU6 and NU10.

The Project Scope

The Qumza Highway project entailed the upgrade of a single lane dual carriageway to a surfaced dual lane dual carriageway. The scope of work also included the construction of three concrete culvert structures (to improve catchment water flow) across the roadway. A new storm water line, to control and re-distribute run-off water from the roadway efficiently, was also installed.

The main challenge faced was the traffic accommodation on the busy Qumza Highway, which was managed via several traffic diversions created to stage the works, without affecting the routine of the local communities.

Stefanutti Stocks completed the project seven months before the scheduled project completion date.
