Premier Project Profile

Processing Plant, RBIDZ Phase 1A

The piling to Wilmar Processing SA’s Processing Plant, RBIDZ Phase 1A in the Richards Bay’s international development zone was undertaken by the Stefanutti Stocks Geotechnical Discipline between October 2020 and May 2021.

Background: The scope included piling to the warehouse, ETP tanks, boiler and utility tanks, bulk storage tank farm and CPG warehouse. Initially the scope required the Bill of Quantities to be priced, however, Stefanutti Stocks Geotechnical later agreed to provide a design and construct solution. Before work could begin lateral and tension support tests were required to verify this design and the compression settlement criteria.

The Project Scope

The project consisted of the installation of 25 843 metres of piling, with diameters from 450mm to 650mm. While piling was being undertaken to the tank farm, the site team experienced variances in the geotechnical conditions. On investigation, soft clay i.e. Hippo Muds were encountered. This then required additional concrete and the re-design of the piles in these areas.

The contract was on programme to meet the project duration of 70 days, however, work was stopped for two months, due to the lack of access and the delayed issue of drawings.

Once work was able to recommence, the project was successfully completed and delivered to specifications, and achieved a Lost Time Injury Frequency of zero.
