Premier Project Profile

Palapye Water Treatment Plant Expansion

The multidisciplinary Palapye Water Treatment Plant Expansion project in Botswana was undertaken by the Stefanutti Stocks Heinsite Joint Venture for the Water Utilities Corporation between June 2019 and March 2022.

Background: The water treatment plant receives and treats 40ML/day of raw water from Dikgatlong, Letsibogo and associated well-fields. The plant expansion is expected to increase the capacity of the existing plant which will handle maximum flows provided by the North-South Carrier pipeline from the SR2B reservoir.

The Project Scope

This multidisciplinary water infrastructure construction project entailed the design, supply, installation, construction, and commissioning of the Palapye Water Treatment Plant Expansion Project.

The project was undertaken by the Stefanutti Stocks Heinsite Joint Venture with the support of the following major sub-contractors: Metsi Projects (mechanical), EDSE Projects (electrical and instrumentation) and Bigen Africa (design).

The scope of work that was undertaken by the Stefanutti Stocks Civils Discipline included the construction of:

  • Flow control and flow measure chambers
  • Inlet & blending chambers
  • Pre-lime building and coagulant storage facilities
  • Two pulsator clarifiers
  • Ten rapid gravity sand filters
  • A contact tank & 7Ml clearwater reservoir
  • Water recovery system
  • Site chambers
  • Chemical dosing building
  • MCC room
  • Interconnecting pipework
  • Four Operator houses (2 single-storey/2 double-storey)
  • Refurbishment of a 2,5km access road.
  • Internal plant roads
  • New control room building

The project was constructed during the COVID-19 pandemic and operations continued during the hard lockdown. In spite of the related challenges the contract was completed on time and to the satisfaction of the client.

The installed SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition)system was designed and installed, and integrates both plants, which are operated from the same control room.

The plant first supplied potable water during January 2022 and is running well.

Notable quantities

  • 7 250m³ concrete
  • 25 200m² formwork
  • 795 tons reinforcing
