Heritage Project Profile

Baia Mall

The prestigious Baia Mall construction project in Maputo, was undertaken by SS Construções (Moçambique) for Baia Mall: Autódromo-Gestão Imobiliária SARL (AGIL) consortium between May 2016 and November 2017.

Background: Maputo’s Baia Mall was to become the largest shopping centre in Mozambique and was hailed a first of its kind in the country.

The Project Scope

Baia Mall was built to accommodate one-hundred shops and restaurants, as well as parking for up to nine-hundred cars. It is located right against an existing 6 000m2 Game store, which traded throughout the construction period. In addition to operational and public safety considerations, parking for one-hundred-and-forty cars was to be always available for Game customers. This resulted in the acceleration of the construction section of the new roof-level parking, including the ramps and access roads.

Once the roof parking was complete and available to customers, the ground level parking area (which made up approximately twenty per cent of the mall construction area) could be released for construction of this area of the mall to commence, and to be completed in time for the opening. Construction in this section only began eight months after the project started and had to be completed within the same amount of time, for the mall opening in November 2017.

Further project highlights included the construction and furniture, fixtures, and equipment (FF&E) installation for the 2 000m2 Woolworths store, as well as the 6 000m2 Super Spar that was completed in a record four months.

SS Construções also constructed the mall’s water treatment plan, a sewer treatment plant with 13 pump stations, an MV generation system to provide full emergency back-up power, as well as the installation of four escalators and five glass lifts.

A few months after completion the new mall was formally inaugurated by President Filipe Nyusi on Thursday 7 June 2018.
