Premier Project Profile

ABinBev Africa (Pty) Ltd

Project Zambezi, a greenfield brewery construction in Maputo, for ABinBev Africa (Pty) Ltd, was undertaken by SS Construções (Moçambique), Lda between February 2019 and December 2020.

Background: Following post tender interviews the construction of the new brewery for Cervejas de Moçambique (CDM) was awarded to SS Construções (Moçambique), a local contracting company that has a reputation for completing large construction projects within programme, and to high quality standards.

The Project Scope

The project for the greenfield construction project saw the construction of over thirty separate buildings or structures, that would house the plant, systems, and facilities to produce the CDM beverages. The mechanical installations preceded the finishing and final commissioning of the constructed buildings.

A delay in the programme due to a delay in the relocation of an overhead MV powerline as well as the late handover of bulk earthworks/ platforms by other contractors meant that special acceleration measures had to be implemented for the buildings to be completed in time to meet the mechanical installation programme. This acceleration was made possible through some redesigning of the buildings, that enabled faster construction. Steel bridges – that carry the various pipe services and transport product between the processes – interlink the various buildings.

The project, which saw a total of over 2,3 million manhours worked and 1 584 people on site at peak, was completed with a Lost Time Injury Frequency of zero.
